How to Choose a Calming Bed for an Anxious Dog

If your dog paces at night, hides during storms, or struggles when you leave the house, the right bed can genuinely help. Dogs are den animals: enclosed shapes, raised edges, and soft walls give them a sense of protection that flat surfaces cannot.

What to look for

• Raised rims. A bolster or donut shape gives your dog something to press against and rest their head on, which is how many dogs self-soothe.
• The right size. Measure your dog curled up, not stretched out, and add a few inches. Too big and the bed loses its cozy, nest-like feel; too small and they will avoid it.
• Washable covers. Anxious dogs settle faster in a bed that smells familiar, but you will still want to wash the cover regularly. Look for removable, zippered designs.
• Non-slip base. Especially on hard floors, a bed that slides when they step in can startle a nervous dog into avoiding it.

Helping your dog adopt the new bed

Place it where your dog already likes to rest, drop in a worn t-shirt that smells like you, and reward them for stepping in. Most dogs claim a new bed within a few days. If your dog is still unsure after a week, try moving it to a quieter corner - some dogs want a view of the room, others want a hideaway.
